Review
I love everything Eva writes!  These stories are so unique.  She makes you fall in love with her characters.  With her being an English Professor, there are rarely any errors, she's still human though, so they do exist.  She really has a way with writing, from describing Than's first experiences, to the personalities given to Therese's pets.  I read the last two books of this trilogy in one sitting. The personal strength and the strength of their love, these two take on every obstacle thrown at them, with confidence that it will be overcome, is just amazing.  The only reason these get four stars, is because I've read other books of hers that are even better!  I still don't understand how this author is not more well known! She is an awesome writer, and hands-down better than many of the more mainstream writers that I've read in my life!

Celebrate The Calibans Cover Reveal and Enter to Win $50!

To celebrate the cover reveal of the third and final book of The Purgatorium Series, Eva Pohler is hosting a fabulous Facebook event and rafflecopter giveaway.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HCH2D86/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HCH2D86&linkCode=as2&tag=yohameatfrbo-20&linkId=QHXHPJ4RLC3AHWDK
In the first book, The Purgatorium, seventeen-year-old Daphne Janus has no idea that her parents have sent her to an experimental psychologist on an island off the coast of California as a last-ditch effort to save her from herself.

Her best friend and life-long neighbor takes her to a mostly uninhabited island with a wildlife preserve on one side and Chumash Indian ruins on the “haunted” side. The resort might be beautiful, the beach pristine, and the views from the headland amazing, but strange things begin to happen that soon have Daphne running for her life. At first she finds the therapeutic games thrilling: the ghosts that visit her room, the dropping elevator, and the kayak incident are actually kind of fun once she recovers from them. But when her horse bucks her off during a trail ride and she becomes lost on the haunted side of the island, it’s not fun anymore, and she wonders if her parents have sent her there to help her or to punish her.

People go to the island wanting to die, and they leave fighting to live. This book is FREE!

In the second book, Gray's Domain, Daphne is delighted to learn she will now have a chance to have revenge on her parents and boyfriend by participating in their therapy.  It’s payback time, and Daphne can’t wait to begin.

Dr. Gray defends her dubious methods by claiming that all treatments come with risks, but when real bullets fly and lives are at stake, she decides she wants no part of it and hatches a plan to save her family against what she sees as a tyrannical doctor.

This book is currently $3.99 on Amazon.

Without further ado, another masterpiece from Book Cover Corner!

In the final book, The Calibans, Daphne returns to the island to save her best friend, Cam, and the other "Calibans" who've been brainwashed by Dr. Gray, but, once again, things aren't what they seem. Daphne's entire world comes crashing down along with the Purgatorium when federal ATF officers arrive with a warrant during a dangerous exercise. What she believed to be so isn't, and the blurry line between art and reality leaves her reeling.

OH WOW! This book is by far the best book I've read in years! This book was like a really good therapy session for me.  The end was just, OMG, I was bawling hysterically.  I wish this kind of place was REAL!  The weird stuff that happens, it can be confusing, but by the end you will understand why it was necessary.  The end, it's just amazing.  I can't praise this book enough.  I knew Eva was an awesome person before reading this book, and as you may know, I've read several of her books in addition to this one.  After reading this book though, I know I have to read everything she writes.  Even her lesser known titles.  If you haven't picked up a book by this awesome lady yet, you're seriously missing out.  Go buy this one ASAP.  If you have any kind of family dysfunction at all, you will be able to relate to Daphne, and may find this book as healing as I did.

Excerpt
Before they reached the main level, the elevator jerked and stopped.
“What’s going on?” Daphne asked, as her brain fogged up with fear.
The lights blinked off. They were enveloped in darkness.
“You gotta be kiddin’ me,” Stan said.
“What’s happening?” She couldn’t think. Her hands flapped beside her like the wings of a jarred moth.
“It’s okay, Daphne,” he said in a soothing voice. “We’re going to be fine. I’m trying to find the emergency switch. Someone will get us outta here soon.”
Tears ran down her face and her stomach dropped out from under her. She felt like she might be sick. Then it occurred to her that this might be the exercise Cam had agreed to set up for Hortense Gray.
“This better not be an exercise. This isn’t one of their exercises, is it?” She felt along the wall of the elevator for the rail, and when she found it, she held on tight.
“What are you talking about?”
“You know, therapeutic games? Cam knows I’m scared of elevators. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what’s going on here. They’re making me face my fear. Well forget this! Do you hear me out there? I don’t like this one bit!” She hit her fist against the elevator wall.
“Calm down, Daphne.”
“I thought therapeutic games would be like relay races and rock climbing. Scaring the crap out of me is not why I came!”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“I’m sorry, Stan. This isn’t your fault. Oh, God, oh my crap, I can’t breathe!” She felt helpless, out of control, at the mercy of this stupid elevator and the way it was closing in on her, stifling her oxygen, trapping her, not letting her out. “Let me out!”
“Come here.” He pulled her into his arms with a tight grip, forcing her to hold still. “Relax. It’s okay,” he said softly.
The lights flickered and then came on. The elevator dropped a few more feet to the bottom floor.
“Ahhh!” Daphne cried, catching against the wall.
The doors opened, and Daphne leapt out, trembling and angry and amazingly relieved. She avoided the eyes of the others in the foyer as she tried to regain control of her breathing and rushed from the building.
Stan caught up to her and put a hand on her shoulder just outside the main building. “You okay?”
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HCH2D86/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HCH2D86&linkCode=as2&tag=yohameatfrbo-20She caught her breath and then said, “No.”
“Let’s head back to the rooms.” He slid a hand behind her back and nudged her down the sidewalk.
“So are they scaring the hell out of you, too?” she asked, after her breathing had returned to normal. “Any games as crazy as that?”
“What do you mean? What games?”
“Isn’t Dr. Gray putting you through therapeutic games?”
“I’m here studying the Chumash Indian ruins and archaeological sites for a paper I’m writing.”
Daphne stopped on the sidewalk near the pool, where the underwater lights had turned on, making the water glow in the dusk falling around them. “I don’t understand.”
Stan put an arm around her waist and pulled her onward. “If you ask me, Cam’s just teasing you.”
“No. Dr. Gray said so, too.”
“Therapeutic games? What does that even mean?”
Daphne shrugged. “I don’t intend to stay and find out.”
They reached her unit.
“You just got here and made my trip one hundred percent better. I hate to see you leave.”

The Gatekeeper's Daughter

4 of 5 Stars

Therese and Than fell in love in The Gatekeeper's Sons.  In The Gatekeeper's Challenge, Therese was SOOOO close, but ultimately failed her last challenge, so Than broke an oath to turn Therese into a god anyway.  Now Therese has to find her purpose in order to remain a god, and Ares is paranoid.  With godly powers, Therese may want to get vengeance for her parents' deaths.  While that isn't really in her nature, Ares kidnaps her, fearing her potential actions.  Will Therese find her purpose so she can remain a god?  Will they be able to convince Ares that she is not a threat?

This was a really good read!  I may be biased, but I can't recommend this author enough!  I read this book and the previous book in one sitting.  Probably would've started the next one too if I had had it, as this story just ended too soon for me.  The personal strength and the strength of their love, these two take on every obstacle thrown at them, with confidence that it will be overcome, is just amazing.  I can't wait to see what else Eva has planned for these two in the near future!  If you haven't already, go grab all three books!  You won't regret it.

Review of The Gatekeeper's Challenge by Eva Pohler

4 of 5 Stars

In The Gatekeeper's Sons, Therese and Than fell in love.  Ten months later, Than has been out of contact, but frantically searching for a way for Therese to become a god, so they can be together. He finally finds a way, but to do so, Hades tells them that Therese has to successfully complete 5 challenges.  With no outside help, she has to go up against a Hydra, the Minotaur, a dragon...as well as a few other obstacles, both personal and challenge related.  Will Therese be able to succeed?  Will they finally be able to be together?

This was a great read.  With so much action and excitement, I read this book and the next in one sitting!  I was really rooting for Therese to succeed.  She and Than had already been through so much, though I wanted to smack him when he simply tells her he's been "busy" when he finally sees her.  Not busy trying to find a way for them to be together, just BUSY?!  I love this author, she never fails to get me sucked into her books whenever I read them!  If you haven't read any of her books, I recommend you go get The Gatekeeper's Sons. It's still free on several sites, what have you got to lose?  May want to buy The Gatekeeper's Daughter when you buy The Gatekeeper's Challenge, Eva ends this book with one hell of a Cliffhanger!  So go out and buy them all now, and keep an eye out for more reviews of books from this author.  I plan to read, if I can, everything she has ever written!

The Gatekeeper's Sons by Eva Pohler

Audiobook tour button
4 of 5 Stars

Oh wow, where do I start?! I love this author! Eva Pohler has a gift for making the reader emotionally attached to the characters, in a matter of PAGES! I love the fact that she's an English teacher, I can be confident that my brain will never stumble over something in her books. Can't even stress how important that is to me, lol. Now on to the book!

Therese Mills is a 15 year old girl who watches her parents die, right in front of her. If things had happened just a little differently, she would've died too. In a coma for a week, with an amazing gift for lucid dreaming, Therese meets the gods Hypnos and Thanatos. Hip is fascinated by her dreaming skills. After one kiss, she about sweeps Than off of his feet, causing him to make a deal with his father Hades that will change both of their lives forever!

I loved this book! I can't wait to start the next one! If I did partial stars...this would get more than a 4. Not quite a 5 though, I save that for another amazing book this author has written. She really has a way with writing, from describing Than's first experiences, to the personalities given to Therese's pets, lol! I just love her writing and can't wait to read more. I, like another reviewer friend of mine, just don't understand how this author is not more well known! She is an awesome writer, and hands-down better than many of the more mainstream writers that I've read in my life! I hope this author continues writing for many years to come! I can't wait to see what she will come up with next!
